January Blues? Not Around Here!

I read an article this week that this past Monday may have been the most depressing day of the year.  Going back to work after a period of time with family and friends, coupled with the short days of winter may send some folks into a depression.  Ugh.

Personally I will admit that the short (and cold) days of winter are tough for me to take.  But, here at the office, we take a different approach when it comes to that first Monday in January when we’re all back to work on a regular basis.  That’s a day that we actually look forward to.  Really!

Coming through the Christmas season in retail can be…**ahem**…trying to say the least.  There is a general sense of urgency in orders from late November through mid December which definitely heightens our stress levels here in the warehouse.  We’ve got the process down pretty well, so we can generally go with the flow, but there are definitely more issues and interesting customers to deal with during that time.

So, come January we’re ready for some peace and new energy.  We take this time to clean the warehouse.  Brainstorm marketing strategies.  Roll out new products.  See what products aren’t selling.  Clean our desks.  Clean out our brains so to speak.

So I enjoy this time of year at work.  My mind is happy to be sorting through marketing strategies and business goals and product ideas.  Oh, and there’s usually still chocolate left from the gift box our landlord gives us, so you can be sure we reward ourselves early and often.  New marketing idea?  Get yourself a piece of chocolate!  New idea for a token?  Go enjoy that chocolate covered almond!

Here’s hoping you’re enjoying these first few days of the new year!  Happy 2014!

Getting Creative With Our Forever Family Blessing Coin

shawnaforeverfamilyeditemilyforeverfamilyeditkristenforeverfamilyeditbrendaforeverfamilyedit

I have a friend who sells Origami Owl Lockets.  The company tagline is “Every Locket Tells a Story…What’s Yours?”  The idea is that you create a locket with charms or a necklace with dangles that represents your life.  I’ve created several themed necklaces (3 in fact…I’m kinda addicted) and I love them!

We recently designed a Blessing Coin with an adoption theme.  We call it our Forever Family Blessing Coin and it represents my own personal journey to adopt our son.  Turns out, it also works well with the Origami Owl dangles and a few of my adoptive mama friends thought so too!  The Happiness, Hope, Love, Tree of Life, initials, Karma, and Heart dangles all tie-in to this theme of adoption.  We all created our own special version of what adoption means to us and they are each just slightly different from the other.  I love that.

I also love that our products can be so versatile.  Whether you use our tokens as a necklace charm, a talismans for your pocket, a physical daily reminder of positive thoughts or just a pretty desk sitter – there is no limit to the energy they can create if you give them the power.

Tell us how you’ve created something with a token or stone.  We want to see!

How do you define bravery? (GUEST POST)

Did you know that about 1 in 300 kids will be diagnosed with childhood cancer? I bet if you add up the kids represented in your facebook friend list, you get to more than 300. September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness month, so now is the time to learn more and to bring awareness to the need for research and support of childhood cancers. Unfortunately, I have a friend whose son recently lost his battle with cancer. This month I will wear gold in his honor and try to spread the word about ways to support those children fighting cancer.

Like so many of us, I didn’t know what to do or say when I heard the news. Fortunately, my friend was surrounded by friends and family who know her much better than I do, but I still wanted to let her know that she was, and continues to be, in my thoughts and prayers. In searching for ways to show my support without intruding on her life, I got a small token from CourageInStone.com that I hoped would be a tangible way of letting her know my thoughts. I put the token on my hall table with the intention of mailing it within a few days. Unfortunately, the token disappeared and I didn’t see it for weeks. Until one Sunday morning…

My son and I were headed for church, walking down our driveway as we do several times a day, every day. As I was getting into the car, I noticed something on the ground. It was the token. How in the world did it get there? How did I just now notice it? How did it not get run over/smooshed/dirty? I have no idea. I picked up the token, put it in my pocket, and vowed to get a card and mail it that day. Off we went to church. It turns out that when we got to Mass, not only was my friend at church with her son, but they were heading out of state for additional medical treatments the next day. At this mass our Priest gave them a special blessing and the whole Parish offered their prayers. After Mass, I found my friend, surrounded by many others. I gave her a quick hug, assured her of my continued prayers, and put the token in her hand. Clearly, it was no accident that I found the token in the driveway that morning.

I have no idea if my friend still has the token or if she even remembers our encounter. I suspect not – in the midst of all of the chaos that day, and in the weeks and months that followed, I’m sure our brief hug was relatively insignificant. But I hope my prayers and wishes were one small drop of love, hope, and strength that combined with many others to surround her with a sea of support. Sadly, this brave young man lost his battle with cancer. His spirit and bravery still live on and are still inspiring others.

Please take some time this month to learn more about childhood cancers. More importantly, please take this time to DO more to support children with cancer and their families. Consider making a donation to an organization like St. Baldrick’s Foundation that focuses on childhood cancer research: http://www.stbaldricks.org or to Camp Sunrise that provides a summer camp experience for kids with cancer: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/campsunrise.

Gone But Not Forgotten

5680

This weekend I will be attending two funerals. The first is for someone very young and the other is for someone who lived a long happy life. I have great sadness that they will not share this world with us anymore but find peace in knowing that both of them were truly loved and leave behind families that will forever be changed by their presence.

Death touches and affects us all, it is inevitable. I think it is how we choose to remember and celebrate someone’s life that is the true statement of human character. At these services their immediate family will be devastated and everyone will sit in silence and ponder our own existence and how precious life is.

I will be giving the In Loving Memory Pocket Token to a few people at these services. I can only hope the words inscribed on the back

“Gone, yet not forgotten,
although we are apart,
your spirit lives within me,
forever in my heart. “

will help them carry on in the coming days, weeks, and years without someone who meant so much to them.

Saint George – Patron Saint of the Military Token: $1.75/each

St George 5662

We carry a collection of Patron Saint Tokens and today I decided to learn a bit more about the Saint George – Patron Saint of the Military Token.

My friends at Google and specifically Wikipedia tell me: He is immortalized in the tale of Saint George and the Dragon and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. His memorial is celebrated on 23 April, and he is regarded as one of the most prominent military saints.

Saint George on his mighty horse is depicted slaying the dragon on the front of our coin and the back reads:

 Keep us safe,
day and night.
Give us courage,
strength, and might.

These days, those serving in our military aren’t slaying actual dragons but keeping all of us and themselves safe.  This is something I know we are all so thankful for.

Volunteers Make a Difference Pocket Token: $1.75/each

As the school year begins, teachers will be looking for volunteers to do everything running photo copies to running class parties. Most schools thrive when their volunteer program is strong.

Just don’t forget that when your child is no longer school age this doesn’t mean your volunteering days have to end. Find a local nursing home, library, or animal shelter and volunteer your time and energy there. There is always a need for those who make a difference.
