Barrettes…not just for kids!

It is so fast and easy to turn our pewter pocket tokens into
a classy barrette. I absolutely love these. ~Natalie

What You Need:

  1. Choose several pewter pocket tokens.  I lined up a row of five pewter hearts and three sand dollars for my two barrettes.
  2. Glue the pocket tokens to the barrette.
  3. Wear it!  (Be sure to wait for the glue to dry before
    putting it on!)

Make these for yourself, or make a grouping of three for a unique, practical gift!

Namaste

Probably the most asked about word – in terms of what it means – in our line of stones and tokens is Namaste.  For those that don’t automatically know what it means, it definitely is an attention getter.  I was familiar with the word in the general sense, but decided to dig a little further…

(From:  Phylamean lila Desy’s Holistic Healing Glossary, as found on About.com Holistic Healing)

Definition:  Namaste is a Hindi salutation or greeting. The word Namaste is a combination of the two Sanskrit words: nama, and te. Basically, nama means “to bow” and te means “you.”

Interpretation:  The God/Goddess Spirit within me recognizes and honors the God/Goddess Spirit within you.

Mudra of Namaste:  Hands are held together at the palms in front of the heart or brow chakra. Head is bowed slightly downward. Eyes are sometimes closed.

A Yogic Thank You:  Yoga students often repeat “Namaste” at the end of each class as a thank you, honoring their instructor.

Equalizer:  Namaste is significant because it is a humbling gesture. Namaste is done as a recognition that we are all on equal standings, all of us are children of divinity. We are one.

Who Can Namaste?  Namaste can be used as a greeting for all ages, all genders, all races. Namaste greetings can be given to friends, family members, and also strangers.

Written Notation:  The word “Namaste” is often used as a closing notation (without the accompanying prayerful hand and bowing head gestures) in written communications similar to “sincerely,” “best regards” or “love.”

Pronunciation: Nah-mah-stay

What a lovely word and gesture!  Equalizing and peaceful.  I think I need to use it more in my life!

Namaste,
Brenda

Bigger is definitely not always better

(l to r): Brenda, Natalie, Suzi!

A customer called today and said “I don’t know how many people work there, but…” and it got me thinking.

We often talk around here about how people must perceive our company when they call or place an order.  Do they think we’re Amazon with a distribution center of massive proportions?  Do they think we’re one person, working out of our garage?  Or do they think we’re somewhere in the middle?  And most importantly, do they care?

I used to take great pains to ensure this fact was never quite revealed.  For sure, we are not Amazon by a long stretch.  There was, however, a short time when I did work out of my basement.  But when someone calls and obviously can’t determine whether we’re one or 1000 people, I realize that it might not matter, as long as several things are in place.

First of all, we have the distinct advantage of being an online company, which means we can reach a large amount of people with very little effort.  Well, by ‘very little effort’, I mean that relatively speaking of course.  After years of massive amounts of blood, sweat and tears, when we go home at night, the business still runs.  Without us.  Hallelujah!

Secondly, when the business is physically open, I’ve chosen to surround myself with two awesome people.  (This is not always easy…read my blog post At least they were being honest.) Two fabulous people do the work of 10 mediocre people.  It’s simple mathematics.  My hope is that I’ve created a warm, honest, fun, inspired workplace.  In turn I expect motivated and passionate employees.  So far it seems to be working.

Third, we sell products that mean something.  I know it comes across in our voices on the phone, in our emails, in our blogs, on Facebook, and on our website.  We believe in what we sell and all that goes along with that.  We believe in our manufacturers, and the quality of the product, and we believe we are fair.

And last, but certainly not least, we try very hard to conduct business in a professional, honest, and organized manner.  We take great care in getting the correct product to you in a careful, timely and inexpensive manner.  When we make a mistake, we correct it.  If you need help with an order, we give it.  We try not to get snippy.  We try to get it.

So when all of the above happens…it’s easy to masquerade as something bigger than we are.  But in the end, I don’t think any smoke and mirrors are necessary.  And we’ve filled almost 30,000 orders to prove it.

Spruce up your bulletin board

I took a plain ole’ wooden bulletin board and added a little ‘bling’ in the form of glass spirit stones.  Now the board has both color AND inspiration!  ~Natalie

What You Need:

  1. An assortment of Glass Spirit Stones.
  2. A plain bulletin board with wood frame.
  3. Craft glue.

How to go from plain to wow in 3 simple steps:

  1. Choose from the huge word selection of Glass Spirit
    Stones
.  I picked combinations of 2 words such as ‘Accept Change’ and ‘Trust Love’.
  2. Be creative and glue the stones in a pattern around the border of the bulletin board.
  3. Hang it up and enjoy!

The Genie doesn't photograph well...

I recently received this inquiry from an eBay customer, regarding our Genie Lamp – 3 Wishes Inspiration Coin.

“hiya im not being nasty but do these work ive been on your feed back (on EBAY) and you have getten 5 negative feed backs so how are you expected for people to belive if they work or not im just being straight with you”

So many thoughts tumbled through my head as I read this person’s
question, including, but definitely not limited to the following:

  1. I wonder what the note would say if he/she was being nasty and wasn’t being straight with me?
  2. Do any of our 5 negative feedbacks on EBAY in the last year have to do with wishes not coming true?
  3. Am I on Candid Camera?
  4. If these Genie/3 Wishes coins really worked do you think we would be
    sharing them with others?

While I am still not sure what the author of the note really was looking for in an answer to their query, I AM sure about the answer to question #4…a resounding “YES”!

Let me come at you from a different angle on this one.  While I know that a Genie is not going to pop out of the lamp pictured on this coin, I do like to think that making a few wishes can brighten someone’s day.  The Lighthouse/Shine coin may not actually help you win the upcoming football game, but it will probably boost your confidence.   When you are struggling to maintain yourself in the face of a hard situation just the words “Take a Deep Breath” on a token might give you a moment of peace.  That is what CourageInStone.com and our products are all about – making life just a little better for anyone who may need a pick me up.

When we ship a large order of engraved “Hope” stones to a cancer fundraising event, I know that our rocks can’t cure cancer but do they give someone’s spirit a lift?  I sure hope so.

One of our most popular items is the Pewter Pocket Angel.  The pocket card that can be purchased with them reads “An Angel for your pocket to remind you that you’re not alone.”  Is there a real true angel in your pocket?  No, but can a small token make you feel comfort in a time of need?  You bet…and I love selling those tokens over and over again.

I am still mulling over how to actually answer the Genie Coin question, but I will say that no amount of good or bad feedback can steer a person into believing anything.  That, my friends, must come from somewhere in your heart…

Packin’ and Shippin’ One Treasure at a Time

Natalie with her packing assistants.

When I tell people about my new job, the first thing I explain is, I work with two inspiring women and two adorable dogs. The choice to leave my previous job of twelve years was a momentous decision for me, and after two months at www.CourageInStone.com I know it was meant to be.

I am a business student and this job excited me for two reasons. Firstly, because it is an online company, selling worldwide, and that is the direction business is heading.  Second, my employer is a female entrepreneur who I can respect and look up to.

Once I got into the routine of packing and shipping, I have fallen in love with the products.  Sending out a small, inexpensive item which will end up as a cherished treasure to somebody in Australia, Canada or Great Britain or even just up the road, moves me daily. Received in remembrance, hope or love, that token or rock is priceless to someone.

I am very happy to be part of the www.CourageInStone.com team…a company to be proud to work for!

Lost in Translation

The unfortunately un-magnetized Christian Fish token.

Do you ever feel like you are talking and no one is listening?  Sadly, that feeling comes to me on a regular basis when answering questions our customers have about our products.  I feel that after working with these items for over 3 years I am pretty qualified to answer most questions and usually do so in a pretty clear way.  But every now and then someone just has to be told again and again and again.

Below is the email stream that I recently had with a customer over a two day period about one of our Inspiration Coins:

Customer: Will these stick to a magnet? How big are the tokens in comparison to a quarter? Nickel? Thanks.

Suzi: We have never attempted to make these into magnets but I assume it would be possible. They are approximately the size of a nickel but oblong. Thanks!

Customer: Is there any way you can confirm they’ll stick to a magnet?

Suzi: If you are asking if they are naturally magnetic the answer is no. We have had people buy many of our tokens to make them into magnets, so it will depend on what adhesive you use to attach the magnet. As I said before we have never attempted to make them into magnets. Thanks!

Customer: No, all I’m asking if it will stick to a magnet?  If I took a magnet and placed it on a quarter, the magnet would not “magnetize the quarter” and stick to it.  So, will these stick to a magnet like other metal objects?  Sorry to be a pain, but it’s important.

SuziNo, it will not stick to a magnet.

Please note dear reader that I did not end my final communication with my customary “Thanks!”, this is because I had given up hope at this point that he/she would actually buy the product… I was correct.

Stones or Marble Word Stones from www.courageinstone.com.

Step 2: Use a craft glue to glue magnet onto token.

Step 3: Enjoy your magnet on fridge or filing cabinet.

At least they were being honest

Just as customers sometimes say the darndest things (see ‘You did not just say that’), so too do employees.  I’d like to think that I foster a pretty relaxed atmosphere…one that encourages creativity, hard work and loyalty.  I try to be fair, reasonable and accommodating.   But in the past I’ve had some pretty strange things said to me by employees…things that make me think that some have taken this ‘relaxed’ atmosphere to mean ‘anything goes’.  This is, of course, compounded by the fact that we’re a small business with minimal staff…so when one employee goes missing, the whole company suffers. I’ve jotted down a few of my favorite comments from past employees.  Emphasis on past.

  1. I had an employee text me she was going to be late to a morning meeting because she ‘needed more sleep.’ And no, the meeting was not at 6AM. (I never could quite decide which was more infuriating…the fact that she actually had the nerve to tell me she needed more sleep or that this was communicated to me in a text.)
  2. A lovely lady told me once that she would be unable to continue working until 6PM because she needed to get home in time to have dinner on the table for her husband.  (Bear in mind this was in 2004, not 1964.)
  3. I received a voice mail one Saturday morning from “Stacey”, one hour before the start of her shift, letting me know that she would be unable to make it to work as she had gotten married the night before.  (This from a girl who to my knowledge was not even dating anyone.  I never saw her again…)
  4. An employee once described our warehouse as a ‘tomb’.  (I can only assume she was implying that coming to work was like coming to her death.)
  5. “Leslie” once asked to leave early because she really ‘wanted to go swimming with her mother’.  Huh?  (I’m all for excercise…and I understand swimming is an especially healthful activity, but does it need to be done in the middle of your shift when you are a third of the work force?)
  6. Another employee once called in late because she ‘wanted to go jogging’.  (While it would appear that I have particularly healthy employees, I’m pretty sure they don’t teach exercise over work ethic in college.)
  7. After requiring an employee to vacuum after each shift, she quit the day after she had to change the bag…and actually cited that as the reason.  (Apparently vacuuming was ‘low’ enough…changing the bag was crossing the line!)
  8. I had an employee use me as a character reference for her parole officer.  (I kid you not…thank goodness this was AFTER she was no longer an employee!)

Despite the above list, I have been even more lucky to have some outstanding employees in 10 years.  I have cried with and to some exceptional people, laughed until my stomach hurt, accomplished endless goals, grown the business 10 fold and looked forward to coming to work most days because of employees that I have surrounded myself with.  But the above sure does make me not take for granted the folks that make my life easier!
